MEXICO — A mobile home being transported on Route 2 fell to the pavement Tuesday, stalling traffic for more than an hour.
Skidgell Excavation was moving the mobile home from Wilton to a trailer park in Mexico. As the driver was attempting to back up, the tongue to the trailer bent and the front end of the building fell to the pavement, Calvin Beaumier, who assisted in the transport, said.
Crews moved the building from the roadway. Traffic was down to one lane for vehicles, except tractor-trailers and commercial vehicles that were too big to drive around the home.
Dave Hodgkins, driver and operator for Bancroft Contracting Corp., said he was stuck in traffic as several other tractor-trailers were lined up behind him.
Beaumier said Skidgell was going to attempt to use a bucket loader to lift the home and move it from the roadway. The crew was able to detach the truck from the trailer which allowed the larger vehicles to finally move through.
Mexico Police officer Keith Tilsley and Mexico Fire Department helped with directing traffic. By 4 p.m. the road was open to two-way traffic.
Tilsley said it was merely a misjudgment in backing up and the driver of the trailer would not be receiving any tickets or fines.
A second incident, involving a modular home, on Route 2 in New Sharon blocked traffic around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. In that incident the home slid off a flat-bed trailer and injured a pickup truck driver from Wayne.
