PARIS — Bail for a Woodstock man charged with assaulting two people Tuesday was set at $10,000 cash or $100,000 property Wednesday in 11th District Court.

Joseph Cox, 26, of 178 Perkins Valley Road, faces charges of aggravated assault, criminal threatening, assault, domestic violence assault, terrorizing and violation of condition of release.

His girlfriend, Shannon Young, 23, of Bangor, who was arrested with him Tuesday on a Bangor police warrant for unpaid fines, was released and ordered to pay the fines.

According to a report by Oxford County Deputy Joshua Wyman, Cox assaulted a family member as well as 28-year-old John Danforth of Woodstock.

The report said Cox and Young went to the family member’s home on Perkins Valley Road late Tuesday morning wanting to take a car. Cox vandalized the car and John Danforth went out to confront him and Cox punched him in the face, Wyman wrote.

Cox struck Danforth in the face with a piece of wood and put him in a headlock, the report said. Danforth was hospitalized for his injuries.

Cox ran off, saying he would “return and kill them all,” the report said.

When police arrived, they were told Cox had made suicidal threats and had a gun and a knife. The report said Cox’s father later told police his son had a drug problem and that the gun was a pellet gun. Police were concerned there was a hostage situation, the report said.

About 50 county and state police personnel were involved in a four-hour search for Cox and Young.

At around 4 p.m., someone on Route 26 called police, saying they saw a suspicious couple outside a house. Police responded and arrested the pair, identified as Cox and Young.

Cox was carrying a pellet gun, one official said. He was charged with violating conditions of release stemming from post-conviction bail for theft and forgery that required he not engage in criminal activity.

He was still being held in Oxford County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

Cox’s arraignment is set for Jan. 5 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
