WILTON — The opening of the new Canal Street bridge is set for Tuesday, Dec. 13, starting with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., Town Manager Rhonda Irish told Selectmen Tuesday night.
Representatives from the Maine Department of Transportation, T Buck Construction Inc. of Auburn and town officials are included in the ribbon cutting. The public is welcome to attend, she said. The bridge is open to traffic after the ribbon cutting.
Selectmen also discussed a potential move to single-sort recycling at the Wilton Transfer Station. A brief survey is being taken at the transfer station and will continue this weekend. So far, 95 residents have expressed interest in single-sort recycling with only 10 opposed to the idea.
Irish will continue to research companies that provide the service and costs. Town officials and the Recycling Committee have been looking at this for about a year, she said.
Now a part of Sandy River Recycling, if the town makes a change to single-sort, it will need to give Sandy River a year’s notice that the town will no longer bring recyclables from the transfer station. Only individual trash haulers would bring recyclables from Wilton, she said.
In other business, the board was reminded of the upcoming downtown revitalization public workshop planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Academy Hill School cafeteria.
A team from Wright-Pierce has already done a lot of work on a potential plan for revitalization of downtown, including a study on housing and economic development. Residents were recently mailed surveys to complete, and the team will also present the findings from those, she said. They are looking for input from residents and hope people will come, she added.
Selectmen approved the placement of a sign for the Wilton Free Public Library on the town bridge that accesses the library. The sign will have room for announcements of upcoming events.
The grant application for the East Wilton Tannery cleanup has been mailed and the town is waiting on any results, Irish told the board.
She is also making weekly contact with the Department of Environmental Protection concerning restarting the demolition work at the Forster mill on Depot Street. Nobody is presently working there, although the owner has apparently secured new financing, she said.
During the board’s next meeting on Dec. 20, a workshop on 2012 town goal planning will take place. It’s open to the public and residents can suggest things they would like to see town officials work on next year.
