ORONO — Boston University scored five unanswered goals, including four in an 11-minute, 10-second span of the third period, to rough up Maine, 5-1, in a Hockey East game Saturday night at Alfond Arena.
Sahir Gill scored twice in the third period for the Terriers (10-5-1, 8-4-1 conference), including an empty-netter. Trivino snagged his second goal of the game on the power play for BU during the surge. Alexx Privitra also scored on the man advantage.
Adam Clendening assisted three BU goals. Kieran Miller made 30 saves. Shots were even at 31 apiece.
Lewiston’s Mark Anthoine gave the Black Bears (6-7-2, 5-6-1) a 1-0 lead on the power play at 8:12 of the second period, Kyle Beattie and Nick Pryor assisting.
Trivino tied it wuth 1:37 remaining in the period, set up by Clendening and Alex Chiasson.
Dan Sullivan had 22 of his 26 saves through the first two periods for Maine.
Men’s basketball
UMF 77, Colby-Sawyer 74
NEW LONDON, N.H. — Trailing by 17 points with 13 minutes left in the game, the University of Maine at Farmington came all the way back to stun Colby-Sawyer 77-74 in overtime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Sports Center.
The Beavers evened their record at 4-4 overall and remained unbeaten in the NAC at 4-0. Colby-Sawyer dropped to 5-5 and suffered its first conference loss in four tries.
UMF freshman Joe McCloskey poured in a game-high 20 points and grabbed a game best seven boards to help lift the Beavers to the road win. Sophomore Pat Sumner added 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Senior Kevin Leary chipped in 13 points for the Beavers.
Freshman Koang Thok and senior Will Bardaglio each scored 16 points each to pace the Chargers. Bardaglio, a Maranacook graduate, moved into 12th on Colby-Sawyer’s career scoring list with 1,179 points. Senior James Tobin added 14 points, while freshman Mike Dias contributed 12 points.
UMF held an early two point advantage in the first half, but Colby-Sawyer would lead for the final 18 minutes by as many as 10 with two minutes left. Bardaglio had 13 points to lead Colby-Sawyer, while McCloskey had 12 for the Beavers. The Chargers took advantage of 14 first half UMF turnovers resulting in 11 points.
Colby-Sawyer was comfortably ahead for much of the second half. The Beavers trailed by 15 with 8:23 left but chipped away thanks to hot shooting from beyond the arc. The UMF defense buckled down as well and held Colby-Sawyer to one field goal in the final eight minutes of regulation.
The Beavers completed the comeback with three minutes to go, tying the game at 59. After a three pointer by Leary gave the visitors their second lead of the game at 64-62, Tobin drove to the basket and was fouled. He calmly made both free throws to tie the game, and both teams each missed a shot in the final seconds to force overtime.
The overtime session was back and forth throughout as each team held multiple leads. After Dias gave Colby-Sawyer a 74-73 lead with 1:25 to play, UMF senior Tim Gingras and McCloskey iced the game by each making a pair of free throws.
UMF went 14-for-15 from the free throw line and held a 33-12 edge in bench scoring.
Bates 63, Colby 36
WATERVILLE — Ed Bogdanovich had game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds and Bates took a 35-16 halftime lead on the way to a 63-36 victory over Colby in non-conference men’s basketball Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Bogdanovich shot 6-for-9 from the field and 10-for-11 from the foul line. John Squires also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Bates (5-2).
The Bobcats held the Mules (3-5) to just two points over the final 5:29 of the first half to take the 19-point halftime margin. With the score 40-21 with 17:21 to play, Bates went on a 17-0 run over more than 10 minutes of play to take a 57-21 lead.
Mark Brust added nine points for Bates, while Luke Matarazzo had five assists.
Connor O’Neil paced Colby with 12 points, including 4-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Eric Beaulieu added eight points for the Mules.
Women’s basketball
Colby-Sawyer 74, UMF 51
NEW LONDON, N.H. — The Colby-Sawyer women’s basketball team shot 47.5% from the floor en route to a 74-51 win over the University of Maine atFarmington in a North Atlantic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Sports Center.
The Chargers improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the NAC. UMF fell to 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Colby-Sawyer’s Taylor DeSanty led all scorers with 23 points on 10-for-19 shooting. Junior Cailin Bullett added 19 points and a game-high nine assists. Junior Stephanie Larpenter had eight points in 10 minutes off the bench.
The Beavers were led by a 13-point, seven rebound performance from freshman Lindsay Ranquist. Junior Kenni Norton had 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting off the bench. Junior Rachel Clement put in a solid effort with nine points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Colby-Sawyer pushed its lead to 24 at the 13:17 mark of the second half before UMF battled back with a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to 11. But the Beavers were held to one basket for the last seven minutes of the contest.
Women’s hockey
Maine 2, Union 2
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The University of Maine women’s hockey team finished its two game series against Union College with a 2-2 draw.
Brittney Huneke and Jennifer More each grabbed a goal for the Black Bears (10-7-5, 4-5-1 Hoickey East) on the afternoon.
Union started the game with an early goal just under a minute into the first period. Lauren Cromartie found the back of the net, unassisted to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead. Huneke answered for the Black Bears at 3:45 during a power play for her third goal of the year. Brittany Dougherty assisted Huneke for her 10th assist of the year.
Union started the scoring in the second period when they took a 2-1 lead at 3:07 on a goal by Jeannie Sabourin. She was unassisted on the play. More tied the game for the Black Bears at 15:36 for her fifth goal of the season. She was assisted by Dougherty, her 11th of the season, and Dominique Goutsis, her fifth of the year.
Kylie Smith helped the Black Bears by making 16 saves on the 17 shots that Union sent her way in the period. She stopped all nine in the third and one in overtime for 33 on the day to preserve the tie.
Track and field
Harmon sets two records
GORHAM — Senior Matt Harmon of Auburn set two school records en route to a pair of first-place finishes Saturday as the University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field team opened its 2011-12 season at the USM Field House.
Harmon dominated the field in the shot put and the 35-pound weight throw to earn qualifying marks in both events for the upcoming New England Division III Championships in February and the ECAC Division III Championships in March.
In the shot, Harmon won the event with a mark of 14.50 meters (47-7) and broke the longest standing school record of 14.35 meters (47-1 1/4) established by Ben Willoughby in February 1998. In the weight throw, Harmon broke his own previous record by more than a foot with a toss of 15.47 meters (50-9 1/4).
