Hannaford has issued a recall for fresh ground beef after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service determined it was likely linked to food poisoning that’s sickened 14 people between Oct. 12 and Nov. 20.
Four of those cases were in Maine, State Epidemiologist Dr. Stephen Sears said Friday. Two people were hospitalized. All four are recovering.
A USDA press release says the amount of beef involved is unknown. The recall involves the following beef with a sell-by date of Dec. 17 and earlier:
* 73% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef
* 75% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef
* 80% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef
* 85% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef
* 90% Hannaford Regular Ground Beef
* 80% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef
* 85% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef
* 90% Taste of Inspirations Angus Ground Beef
* 85% Nature’s Place Ground Beef
* 90% Nature’s Place Ground Beef
Eleven of the 14 sickened reported eating fresh ground beef, which prompted the recall. Seven were hospitalized. The suspected beef was sold at Hannaford stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
The food poisoning involves a strain of salmonella called Salmonella Typhimurium that has initially tested resistant to multiple commonly prescribed antibiotics. Symptoms of salmonellosis include nausea, chills and fever, and it can be fatal to those with weak immune systems.
More information will be reported as it is made available.
