WINTHROP — Maine writer Shonna Milliken Humphrey will appear at the Bailey Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Humphrey will speak about her new book, “Show Me Good Land,” which details the gritty underside of northern Maine’s impoverished rural communities.

The book is set in fictional Fort Angus, a once large and flourishing shire town in “the County.” Her heroine, Rhetta Ballou, returns to Fort Angus in the wake of a murder as the community tries to sort through the mystery.

Humphrey was born and raised in rural Aroostook County. She earned a master of fine art’s degree from Bennington College and recently served as  executive director of the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. She has written for the New York Times and Salon.com.

The book signing and free discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 377-8673.
