LIVERMORE FALLS — A local man was injured Wednesday afternoon after he lost control of his car on icy Route 133 and it went through a guardrail and rolled down a steep embankment.

It was one of many accidents in the region after rain fell in freezing temperatures and turned to black ice.

Joseph Schromm, 66, of Livermore Falls was driving on Route 133, also known as Park Street, when the vehicle in front of him started to fishtail, Livermore Falls police Sgt. Steve Allen said.

When Schromm started to slow down and put on his brakes, his car also started to fishtail. The vehicle then did a 180-degree turn, hit the guardrail and went through it, Allen said.

Livermore Falls firefighters worked to cut the car apart, lift the roof and remove the doors to free Schromm.

They were assisted by firefighters from other towns, including Jay, Wayne and Wilton, and brought Schromm up the embankment on a backboard.

A NorthStar Emergency Medical Services ambulance crew tended to Schromm, who had head injuries. He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, police Lt. Thomas Gould said.

A clinical coordinator at Franklin Memorial Hospital said Schromm was treated and released.
