LEWISTON — Five nontraditional college students have been awarded new scholarships of $1,000 each.

The Thomas and Beulah Musgrave Fund Scholarship winners are Julia Bowen of Lewiston of the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College, Chrystal Caron of Lewiston of Kaplan University in Lewiston, and Steven Doyle of Auburn, Nichole Gardner of Livermore Falls and Annissa Morgan of Lewiston, all of Central Maine Community College in Auburn.

The scholarships are provided by the Maine Community Foundation in partnership with College for ME-Androscoggin, Joan Macri of College for ME-Androscoggin said.

The scholarships provide help with tuition and fees for adult learners enrolled in an accredited program of study leading to a degree, certification or similar recognition.

The recipients were selected for their personal statements, letters of recommendation and financial need.

“It was a humbling experience to read the personal statements and to learn how much these applicants are giving up in order to obtain a college degree,” Macri said. She praised their determination and “the almost unanimously shared desire to demonstrate to their children the value of a college education.”

College for ME-Androscoggin will award another five $1,000 scholarships for the fall 2012 semester. Applications will be available in the spring of 2012 at www.collegeformeandroscoggin.org. Eligible students must have resided in Maine for the previous five years, reside in Androscoggin County, and demonstrate financial need and good character.

Recipients may reapply once for this scholarship if they are in good academic standing at their college at the time of reapplication.

College for ME-Androscoggin is a local, nonprofit organization working to improve college aspirations, access and attainment in Androscoggin County. The Maine Community Foundation partners with donors and nonprofits to strengthen Maine communities. (www.mainecf.org )
