I thank the Sun Journal for its coverage of science issues, which goes far beyond what one might expect of a newspaper in a rural area of New England.

In the Dec. 21 issue, it was the Dawn spacecraft, with a closeup photo of the asteroid Vesta; in the past it’s been the Higgs boson, or rovers on Mars, or newly discovered planets orbiting distant stars.

Many people may not see the point of stories that don’t involve their everyday problems and political issues. For me, that’s just one of the benefits of news from physics and astronomy — it reminds us that there are vast, awesome and beautiful things full of mystery that exist far beyond our petty human difficulties. It puts everything in perspective.
