FARMINGTON – Police say they are investigating an explosion Monday night on the Bailey Hill Road.
An explosive device, believed to be a pipe-bomb, was thrown into a field just before the Bailey Farm about 9:05 p.m., Farmington Police Chief Jack Peck said Tuesday morning.
Debris from the explosion was being analyzed by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ Portland office, according to a release issued by the Maine Department of Public Safety Tuesday afternoon.
Although it didn’t explode near homes, a nearby resident was outside Monday night and saw a vehicle in the road and heard two men talking before hearing what she thought was gunshots, Peck said later Tuesday afternoon.
The resident, using an ATV, drove out to the road but the car took off. She attempted to follow the vehicle back down Bailey Hill towards town but when it reached the top of the hill, she saw something else being thrown out the vehicle’s window.
She went back and called police who then blocked off the road until the Maine State Police bomb team could investigate and determine the area was safe, he said.
What the resident saw thrown from the vehicle was a pipe bomb, he said. It was turned over to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Police have little information but do not believe the incident was directed at anyone in particular, Peck said.
This information was updated Tuesday afternoon and changed from what police said Tuesday morning.
