Drop-in child care

LEWISTON — Drop-in child care is available at the YWCA of Central Maine. Perfect for a stay-at-home mom who needs some personal time for appointments, to run errands or to go to the gym, the program is offered Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years old.

Children will experience a preschool curriculum, outside play and social interactions provided by trained and caring staff.

Those who sign up during the month of February will have the $25 registration fee waived.

Services are free for members while participating in a YWCA activity such as water fitness or lane swimming. The program is available to the public at $4 per hour for members and $8 per hour for nonmembers. Prepaid packages are also available, 12 hours for $42 and 25 hours for $92 for YWCA members.

Clover Christmas

AUBURN — A Christmas gathering of family members was held on Dec. 17 at Clover Living Center, where two sisters are residents in the assisted living units. The sisters are Lois Gordon, formerly of Livermore, and Jeanette Buck, formerly of Livermore Falls. A spacious room was provided where everyone could enjoy snacks, cookies, cakes and drinks while visiting.

Caleb Berry, great-grandson of Lois, offered Christmas music on the piano. Susan Buck, daughter of Jeanette, circulated the guest book. This was a very special Christmas party honoring Lois, age 92, and Jeanette, age 90.

Skiing heritage lecture

AUBURN — A lecture on Maine’s Skiing Heritage will be presented at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.

Scott Andrews, curator of the Maine Ski Museum, will present Down-Mountain and Cross-Country: 140 Years of Skiing in Maine. This slideshow of Maine’s skiing heritage is an overview that covers all facets of skiing over the entire time period, from the arrival of Scandinavian immigrants in 1870 to the present.

The slideshow is a fascinating and entertaining experience that is based on 100-plus vintage photographs collected from the museum’s own archives plus several dozen participating clubs, organizations and private individuals. Questions are encouraged and attendees are urged to share personal experiences.

Music workshop

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free music workshop for cancer survivors, their families and friends. Chiming in the New Year will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at CMMC, 12 High St., conference room H.

The sound of hand chimes has been described as “whispers from heaven.” Join presenter Kim Visbaras in this hands-on workshop and learn how easy it is to make music in a group setting. No musical background necessary.

Visbaras has taught numerous hand bell festivals in New England and New York, performed with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the First Parish Ringers of Brunswick in Magic of Christmas and Christmas with Cornils. He also plays African and timpani drums and the accordion.

Brown bag biz

AUBURN — Katie Gray, a Lewiston native, will kick off the Brown Bag Business Series at noon Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Auburn Public Library. Recognized by Maine Women magazine as an emerging leader in business, she will share how she has risen to the forefront of the environmental regulations field which had been largely dominated by men.

A graduate of the University of Maine and Boston University School of Law, Gray is an associate with the Verrill Dana law firm in Portland. An area she has had a significant impact on is her work on Federal Energy Regulations. Outside of her high pressure job, Gray has maintained her love of the arts. She writes poetry and volunteers at the Space Gallery in Portland when her schedule allows.

The focus of her lecture will not only be how to break into a profession normally dominated by males but also how you can adapt your business style to fit any situation.

Dearborn benefit

LITCHFIELD — A benefit dinner for Peggy Dearborn will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Carrie Ricker School. There will be a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and entertainment.

Dearborn has taught in RSU 4 for 39 years. She fell on ice and has been at Maine Medical Center in Portland for several weeks recovering from a head injury. Money raised will benefit her and Dan while they are both out of work. He is staying in a hotel in Portland to be close to her while she recovers.
