FARMINGTON — Students, faculty and members of the public celebrated with a Chinese New Year Festival Monday afternoon in North Dining Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington for Chinese cuisine, games, music and television.
This is the third year that the Office of International and Exchange Programs at the University has sponsored a celebration, Lynne Eustis, assistant director said.
Monday, Jan. 23, was observed around the world as the Chinese New Year, the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It continues for 15-days until the full moon.
Visiting Professor Weishan Wan from the Beijing University of Technology and her mother, Peihao Gong, cooked native dishes including 300 dumplings, spicy cabbage and other dishes.
Professor Wan is teaching Chinese at UMF this year while participating in an exchange program as students and faculty from UMF attend Beijing University. Another professor will visit UMF next year, Eustis said.
Students and community members mixed to play or watch games of Mahjong, Chinese chess and cards. Chinese television was projected on to a large screen as Eddie Lee performed on a Chinese erhu, similar to a violin, and everyone sampled the dishes prepared for the event.
