100 years ago, 1912
Creaking, swinging, slamming and hanging, the old swinging signs still left on Lisbon street made plenty of noise during Thursday’s wind blow. Pedestrians feared for their heads and everyone who had to go about the city became an advocate of modern signs securely placed on buildings. “It’s enough to try to keep your feet in such walking as this without wondering if a sign is coming down over your head,” declared one man. “I am glad, tho, that so many of the merchants have put up new signs.”
50 years ago, 1962
The Crimson Lancers All-American Color Guard will leave Saturday morning to participate in the Quebec Winter Carnival. It will be one of the few units from the United States participating in the event. The Lancers will be using two completely different uniforms, an outdoor style for parades and an indoor uniform will be used for the special exhibition the group will put on at the carnival ball.
25 years ago, 1987
State Police Captain Andrew J. Demers Jr. of New Gloucester was nominated Friday to be chief of the Maine State Police. A graduate of Edward Little High School and a former Lewiston police officer, Demers was recommended by Public Safety Commissioner John Atwood and approved by Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. A public hearing on the nomination will be held by the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on State and Local Government and must be confirmed by the Senate.
