PARIS — A benefit concert for the family of Logan Dam, who was killed in a West Paris car crash this winter, raised $2,700, his friend said.
“We were able to raise $2,700 for the family from donations, T-shirt sales, raffle and cover charge,” said Shawn Boutilier of Paris who helped set up the Feb. 24 concert to help the 19-year-old’s family.
About 350 people turned out to see Rapper Spose and other groups perform at the Crazy 8 club on Route 26 in South Paris.
The event was highlighted by the appearance of Spose whose 2010 hit, “I’m Awesome,” led to his deal with Universal Records. The song became the theme to Canada’s CBC Television new comedy series “Mr. D” starring comedian Gerry Dee.
Boutilier said Dam’s parents, Doug and Deb, were in the audience and were presented the money that night.
“It was a great night. All the performers did a great job,” he said. The lineup also included Boutilier’s band, North Star, C WiLL, Sandbag, Flowpez and Lady Blaze.
Boutilier said that in addition to the artists who donated their time and talent, organizations that donated included The Lake Store, Maine St. Clothing Co., Nomad Cafe, Decrepit Ind., Melby’s, The Trolly House, Ocean Breeze Tanning, Secret Garden, Oxford Plains Speedway, Big Adventure Center, Homeslice Pizza, Creative Media and “Tammy,” who donated a basket from Bath and Body Works that was raffled.
Boutilier said the owners of Crazy 8 donated the space and made it possible for those 18 to 20 years old to attend the concert in a nondrinking section as well. The owners also donated $300. DJ Bump donated time also.
Dam, who was working at Sunday River as a cook, and Rebecca Lynn Mason, 16, of West Paris, an Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School sophomore, were killed in the crash on Route 219 on Jan. 7.
Driver Kristina Lowe, 18, of West Paris, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries. Front seat passenger Jacob Skaff, 22, of Paris, was treated and released at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway that day.
Police said drinking and texting caused the crash.
The accident has had an impact on Boutilier and his friends, some of whom have formed a group to make people more aware of distracted driving issues, he said.
