PARIS — A Norway man accused of breaking into more than a dozen homes and businesses in early 2010 was sentenced Tuesday to serve two years in prison.
Shawn A. McAuliffe, 21, 38 Marston St., was sentenced in Oxford County Superior Court to 10 years with all but two suspended and six years of probation. He pleaded guilty to 31 of more than 70 charges, including burglary, criminal mischief and theft by unauthorized taking.
The charges were from break-ins across Oxford County, including homes and businesses in Norway, Otisfield, Waterford, Stoneham, Greenwood and Sweden.
The District Attorney’s Office dropped more than 40 charges, including one for possession of hydrocodone.
McAuliffe and co-defendants Anthony Goddard, 21, of Lewiston, and Christopher Corriveau pleaded guilty to the crimes.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said the three men stole televisions, household appliances and other items from homes in Oxford County.
The case broke when a detective was driving with a cordless phone handset from a burglarized home where the base phone had been stolen. In Norway, the phone began to beep, a feature on the phone indicating that it was close to the base phone set.
The officer was able to track the phone to the home of McAuliffe. O’Connor said police got a search warrant and found the phone and several other items reported missing from area homes. McAuliffe confessed to the burglary, as did Corriveau and Goddard.
All three men drove around with police to point out the homes they’d burglarized, officials said.
Goddard received the same sentence as McAuliffe on Jan. 30, and received another five-year sentence in a separate burglary. Corriveau is set to be sentenced next week.
