I hope Angus King does not ally himself with a party. Almost all independents elected to Congress do caucus with a party. Both of the current independent senators do. In fact, only one senator has remain so untethered for longer than a month in the last 50 years, and the consensus view is that an unaffiliated senator would never even be appointed to a committee.

That is shameful.

It is shameful that people are forced to pick a side to become useful participants after being elected to the U.S. Senate.

I have great respect for the former governor and think he could help the Senate work through its partisan problems if anyone could.

I think the country needs a senator who is beholden to nobody, and I think it is in Maine’s interest to elect that senator.

It would be difficult for him in the beginning; indeed it may be difficult for him for a long time, but that difficulty would become his strength.

I would tell King to please, stay unaffiliated. After all, it is not as if Sen. Susan Collins needs help getting pork-barrel projects or special interests for the state.
