AUBURN — Sheriff Guy Desjardins is looking for cuts in jail spending again.
With less than four months to go before the start of the 2013 fiscal year, the Androscoggin County Jail is facing a state-mandated 1 percent cut.
“I think this (fiscal) year, 2013, we’re going to finally hit rock bottom,” Desjardins said.
The current budget stands at $5,569,314. The state is asking for a cut of $211,000.
Desjardins said any budget changes will be worked through the County Commission.
Meanwhile, he doesn’t know where the money will come from.
Layoffs are off the table, he said. There are too many inmates in the jail to cut staff. In fact, a recent Department of Corrections analysis of the jail’s staffing found that the Auburn jail should have six more corrections officers.
