WOODSTOCK — Children who attend the elementary school had an extra day to play outside in the warm sunshine Monday because of a leaking water pipe in the school’s library.
SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy said the leak was noticed late Sunday afternoon by a group of local basketball players who had entered the school to use the gym. They immediately notified the school’s lead teacher, Jolene Littlehale.
He said the group could feel the steam and see the fogged windows in the library, which is where the coupling for the pipe apparently gave way.
The leaking water damaged the library’s carpet and some of the Sheetrock. A few books got wet, but the furniture wasn’t damaged, Murphy said.
The part needed for repair was ordered Sunday night, and is expected to be installed Monday. The carpet and damaged Sheetrock are also being removed and won’t be replaced until the area is dry.
Murphy said furniture and books have been moved out of the library. An alternative space in the school must be found to temporarily house the library resources.
He said the decision to cancel school for students was made because of the subsequent disruption the leak would cause.
Students are expected back on Tuesday, March 20.
Murphy said this is the first time in his 10 years as superintendent that such an incident has occurred.
Estimates on the amount of damage have not yet been determined.
