MONMOUTH — A training program will be conducted here for volunteers who would like to get involved in the state’s Signs of the Seasons Program, the goal of which is to study seasonal changes in plants and animals.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Sea Grant will conduct the training at Cumston Public Library from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 27. Training will also be held in Springvale on April 18 and in Falmouth on April 23.
The training is free and open to volunteers, though registration is required and currently open. Participants will learn about the history and science of phenology, which is the study of seasonal changes in plants and animals.
Training will cover the importance of this effort and the connection to changing climate and the research being conducted. Participants will gain practical experience for observing and recording plant and animal life cycles in their backyard, schoolyard or other community location, while contributing valuable data. In addition, participants will learn how to add their data to the national online database hosted by the USA-National Phenology Network.
