RANGELEY — More than $1,000 cash and nearly $500 in checks were stolen from the Lakeside Convenience Store on Main Street between late Monday and early Tuesday, police Chief Dennis Leahy said Tuesday.
Six cartons of cigarettes were also stolen from the store, which is across the street from Franklin Savings Bank, he said.
The owners’ daughter, Ashley Quimby, came in to prepare to open the store and noticed that items had been moved around in the office, he said. She called police.
The store is owned by Lynn and Paul Noyes.
“We received the call about 4:05 a.m.,” he said.
Police arrived shortly after and discovered the door on the side of the building had been pried open and several file cabinet drawers were open, Leahy said.
The scene was processed by Leahy and Rangeley officer Jared Austin and Franklin County Sheriff Sgt. Steve Lowell.
“We recovered the entry tool. It will be taken to the Maine State Crime Lab to be processed,” Leahy said. “DNA samples were taken at the scene.”
Franklin County Cpl. Nate Bean and his tracking dog scoured the area and discovered the person fled south toward the town park in the direction of Farmington, he said.
Police talked to several neighbors to see if they heard or saw anything.
“We are working on some information we received,” Leahy said.
Anyone who may have information on the case for police is asked to call the Rangeley Police Department at 864-3579.
