BETHEL — A woman who was considered missing and in danger may be in Auburn or Falmouth rather than Bethel, where she recently moved.
Police are looking into reported sightings in the past week of Fay E. Johnson, a woman who went missing while moving from Lewiston to Bethel.
Capt. Hart Daley of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that “very credible” sources have reported contact with Johnson, 62, in Auburn and Falmouth as recently as last Saturday.
Police said Johnson is in danger because of a serious medical condition, but Daley said there is “absolutely no indication of foul play” in Johnson’s apparent disappearance. People in Falmouth and Auburn have given accurate descriptions of Johnson in recent sightings, he said.
“Some of the things that she discussed with them would lead us to believe that it certainly was Fay Johnson,” Daley said. “But we need to confirm that.”
“Now that the word is getting out, people are actually paying attention,” he said.
Johnson was in the process of moving into a building in Bethel. On Tuesday, the building was taped off, as Johnson had possessions in the home and police wanted to preserve the condition.
As the search for Johnson unfolds, Daley said, they may go back into the home to continue looking for clues of Johnson’s whereabouts.
Johnson’s landlord alerted authorities on March 12 of a dog that had been left at the home when he realized he hadn’t seen Johnson lately. An animal control officer took the dog, but Johnson still hasn’t been back to the home.
Johnson is described as being 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. She wears a medical alert bracelet with the word “pacemaker” on it.
Johnson’s car, a green 2004 Subaru Forester with Maine license plate SASSYFJ, is also missing. Anyone who may have seen Johnson or has information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office at 800-733-1421.

The animal officer called police, who have been searching for the woman.
