BOSTON (AP) — An animal rights group wants to put snakes on Boston-area trains.
The Boston Herald reports (http://bit.ly/H8pxwF ) that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked the MBTA for permission to put fake rubber snakes on the T for a week for a campaign against the exotic animal skin trade.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said the T is good place to launch the campaign because of the story of Penelope the boa constrictor, which slithered away from its owner on a Red Line train last year and wasn’t found for a month.
PETA wants to put the snakes around a subway car’s straps and polls to raise awareness of the slaughtering of reptiles to make handbags, shoes and other items.
It’s not clear if the MBTA will approve the request.
