Where are members of the press?
Recently, the Center of Public Integrity has named Maine the fifth most corrupt state in the nation — scoring an F in public access of information, legislative accountability and ethics enforcement agencies, and a D+ in political financing.
That Maine is run by a few legal firms, businesses and a political machine is well-known and has become part of the political culture for years now.
But most of the blame rests on a press corps that has lost its investigative soul and has become a mendicant in order to gather favors and news morsels — not really surprising when newspaper owners are politically well-connected.
And the beat goes on. Unfortunately, it is not a news beat.
