LIVERMORE FALLS —  Kathryn M. Ventrella of Fayette, daughter of Michael and Janet Ventrella, was presented with the DAR Good Citizen Award certificate and pin for Spruce Mountain High School, South Campus at an assembly on March 9 by Deborah J. Judkins of Upton, chairwoman of the Good Citizen Committee of the Colonial Daughters Chapter.

Judkins reports that the Colonial Daughters Chapter, based in Farmington, sponsors the award to recognize excellence in seniors of seven local high schools and to encourage patriotism and service. The chapter presents the certificate, pin and monetary award to the student at an assembly at each high school.

Each high school faculty nominates several candidates each year. The person who is chosen to receive the honor must have demonstrated each of the qualities as defined by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree. These qualities are dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The student who most exemplifies the four qualities is chosen by either vote of the senior class or vote of the faculty and administrators, depending on the policy of the school.

Academically, Kathryn is an above average student as evidenced by her ability to remain on the high honor roll since the first quarter of her freshman year. She has consistently challenged herself with AP, honors and college preparatory level coursework throughout her entire four years at Livermore Falls and Spruce Mountain High School. Additionally, she has earned many classroom awards including the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence, a physical education excellence award and the Student of the Month Award in her freshman year. Later, she earned the Euclid Award in math, a teacher’s choice award in biology, the Heisenberg Award for Science and the Phi Beta Kappa Certification of Recognition.

Kathryn has been involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities during her high school career. Athletically, she has been a four-year starter on three varsity teams: field hockey, basketball and softball. She has been named the Mountain Valley Conference Honorable Mention All-Star for each of these teams. During her junior year, she was the captain of the softball team and during her senior season she was the captain of the field hockey team. She has been named to the Maine Field Hockey Association All State Team two years in a row and also to the Maine Field Hockey Association Academic All State Team in her senior year. In basketball, Kathryn was named LFHS MVP for her sophomore year and co-MVP in her junior year.

Further demonstrating her leadership qualities, she has served as class secretary until she was elected to the office of president of her class this year. Kathryn is also a three-year member of the National Honor Society, for which she currently serves as chapter vice president after two years as the secretary. Kathryn participated as a Girls’ State delegate in her junior year and has been a participating in the Student Senate for three years demonstrating her patriotism.

Kathryn spent two years helping others as a library aide and as a peer tutor at the elementary and high school levels. In addition, she has been a member of the math team, the Varsity LF Club, the prom committee and the Bagels and Books Reading Group. In her church, she has been a youth ministry altar server and worked as a volunteer at the Tri Town Food Bank Thanksgiving food distribution for two years. Volunteering to help with the Fayette Family Fun Day and Mt. Blue Middle School Beauty MakeOvers added to her community service time.
