MONMOUTH — Fire gutted a house belonging to a Massachusetts family early Tuesday as about 60 firefighters from five communities tried to save the structure.
The Kennebec Journal reported Tuesday that the blaze at 7 Pleasant St. was called in just after midnight. Monmouth Fire Chief Dan Roy told the Augusta newspaper a blanket draped over a doorway ignited by a burning fireplace ember was the likely cause of the blaze.
Roy said the homeowner, Gustavo Duran of Chelsea, Mass., was staying at the family’s second house with his adult son. The two were in town doing repairs on the house and were sleeping in the living room when the fire broke out. They had not turned on the furnace and were using the fireplace and an electric heater for warmth.
Both men escaped the fire. No injuries were reported.
