PARIS — Selectman Kenneth West announced his resignation Monday night, saying he would be unable to attend future meetings.
The board accepted the resignation with regret, 4-0. “Emphasis on the regret,” Selectman Ted Kurtz said.
Selectman Jean Smart said West would be missed. She praised him for making difficult decisions. “More than one time, you stood up on something that was probably difficult for you.”
Smart singled out an incident when West said that although he had hunted in the Cornwall Nature Preserve, he would support restricting hunting there for the safety of Paris residents. “I really appreciated the courage it took for you to say that,” Smart said.
The room applauded West after the board voted.
West had been a selectman in 2005, but resigned after a year due to duties at his workplace. He worked at Maine Machine Products Co. for 22 years before retiring, and now does accounting work at his wife’s company, Barbara West Income Tax Service.
In 2010, West was re-elected at the same time as Kurtz.
The town is accepting nomination papers for West’s seat until Friday, April 27.
