LEWISTON — A firefighter was arrested Thursday after Maine Drug Enforcement agents said they observed him buying crack cocaine.

Peter Morrell, 47, of 21 Cleaves St., Auburn, was arrested at 3:27 p.m. in a parking lot at Sabattus Street and East Avenue and charged with possession of crack.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he made bail about 5 p.m.

For several years over the past decade, Morrell was one of the department’s fire inspectors. He was dismissed from that position two years ago but later rehired as a firefighter.

Fire Chief Paul LeClair said Thursday that he was aware that Morrell had been arrested but he had no further comment on the matter.
