GILEAD — The oldest rail-related structure in the state will get some major upgrades thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Maine Community Foundation and the Presumpscot Foundation.

The Gilead Railroad Depot was built in 1851. According to a news release from the Gilead Historical Society, it is also one of the oldest rail-related buildings in the country.

Lin Chapman, a member of the historical society, said the funds will be used to rebuild the chimney, add a platform to the front, and do some interior painting.

The society has also received several donations from members to help with the renovation.

The station was moved from Gilead many years ago, was once in Auburn, and was returned to Gilead a couple of years ago.

Its restoration is part of the society’s overall goal to restore the historic village in this Western Maine town.

Work is also ongoing with the former schoolhouse, and the town hall has been renovated.

Chapman said the society hopes to have the newest restoration work completed in time for the town’s annual Friends and Family Day on June 23.

She said the society is also looking for railroad memorabilia and photographs from the Gilead Railroad Depot.
