Genealogy meeting
FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, will meet at the Farmington Public Library, Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Jack Battick, MGS president, who will talk about “The Navy and its Service during the Civil War.” Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.
Creative writing to be shared
FARMINGTON — Thirteen graduating seniors in Maine’s only Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing program will read from their original works in poetry, fiction and nonfiction at University of Maine at Farmington’s Creative Writing Senior Reading. This free and open-to-the-public event will take place at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center.
Student readings will draw from his/her portfolio created as a senior capstone project in UMF’s competitive creative writing program.
Seniors that will read from their work include: Richard Coombs of Islesboro; Renate Dubois of Williston, Vt.; Samantha Ellis of Burlington, Mass.; Jillian Fioretto of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; Marcelle Eyenga Hutchins of Farmington; Katherine Johnson of Hollis Center; Brittany Kashar of Uncasville, Conn.; Katherine Mary Nicoll of Farmington; Emily Pottle of Wilton; Darren Smart of Lincoln; Kristen Start of Camden; Elizabeth Walk of North Yarmouth and Martin Wigall of Lawrence, Mass.
Letter carrier food drive
FARMINGTON — The carriers at the Farmington Post Office will hold their 20th annual food drive on Saturday, May 12.
Local residents are asked to put out nonperishable food items in a bag and place it in or by their mailbox. The letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to a local food bank.
There will also be a food drop in the lobby of the post office from Wednesday, May 9, to Saturday, May 12.
Trout stocking program
FARMINGTON — Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District is holding its spring trout restocking program. A minimum order of 34 brook trout must be placed. Mt. Spring Farm hatchery has both 5- to 6-inch and 6- to 7-inch brook trout and rainbow available for delivery at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14. The price of 5- to 6-inch trout is $2.25 each and $2.70 each for 6- to 7-inch trout. There is a $5 charge per 50 of the smaller trout or per 33 of the larger trout that pays for the box and bag with oxygen needed to transport the fish.
An order form and a copy of the stocking permit must be sent or delivered to Franklin County SWCD, 107 Park St., Farmington ME 04938 along with the check or money order to reserve trout no later than May 10.
Gallon containers of “Clear Pond” to eliminate and prevent algae, as well as 44-pound bags of fresh fish pellets are available when pre-ordered.
