I attended a public meeting May 1 to discuss the SAD 52 school budget. The turnout blew my mind — it was mostly people who worked for the district. Naturally, no one can blame them for protecting their bailiwick, but where were all the suffering taxpayers in this district?

Probably they have felt as ineffectual as I felt. I never got a chance to present my opinions because debate was cut off.

The people on fixed and fading incomes have one more chance. Leeds can expect another $125-plus tax increase as things stand.

There will be a vote on May 8 at the usual polling places, but people should check the time voting is allowed. That will be the taxpayers’ last chance to send the budget back for more cutting.
