WINTHROP — Joseph A. Dane will give a reading and discuss his new book, “Dogfish Memory: Sailing in Search of Old Maine,” on Tuesday, May 22, at Bailey Public Library.

“Dogfish” is a meditative, unconventional memoir that chronicles a lifetime of sailing the Maine coast.

The 6:30 p.m. reading is part of the library’s Lakes Region Forum.

Dane, whose family has deep roots in Maine, writes of his suspension between different versions of Maine: the place as it may be and the place as perceived by summer people, tourists and even salty fishermen. He writes about sailing, weather and stories of his youth.

An English professor at the University of Southern California, Dane has penned  numerous books. He holds degrees from Bowdoin College and Tulane University,  and earned a Ph.D. in comparative literature at Columbia University. His articles appear in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Studies in Bibliography, Huntington Library Quarterly, Gutenberg Jahrbuch and Modern Language Review.
