NEW GLOUCESTER — The community paid tribute Monday to the men and women who died serving in America’s Armed Forces.

The Memorial Day observance included a parade from the AMVETS Post 6 hall to Memorial School, a wreath-laying ceremony and a military flyby. Observers waved flags and applauded as the procession moved along a 2-mile route.

At Upper Gloucester village and Memorial School, Gwen Jordan, a Gold Star mother, and Susan Lunn Burrows laid wreaths to honor military personnel who have served during wartime.

“Let us call to mind all those who have served and fallen … in pursuit of peace,” the Rev. Holly Morrison said at a solemn ceremony at Memorial School. “Be mindful of those who survived and (with sacrifice) to mind, body and spirit.”

Boy Scout Troop 135 members Keegan Delaney, Kyle Curtis and Devon Plummer, assisted by AMVETS Post 6 member William Kiley, raised the flag to half-mast.

Commander Robert Weatherspoon Jr. of AMVETS Post 6 talked about the sacrifice men and women have made and continue to make in the cause of freedom.

“Many in this community have served and are still serving,” he said. “We thank you for the sacrifices you have made.”

He said plans are in the works to erect a veterans memorial monument through the efforts of the New Gloucester Historical Society, AMVETS Post 6 and residents’ support.
