Disabled veterans have until Monday, June 4, to apply to Maine Veterans’ Services for a chance to hunt moose in Aroostook County.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has allocated 15 “any-moose” permits for disabled veterans to participate in the controlled moose hunt via the 2012 Disabled Veterans Moose Hunt Lottery, Peter W. Ogden of Maine Veterans’ Services said Tuesday in a news release.
No more than five permits will be issued to wounded warriors who are sponsored by national organizations to come to Maine and hunt with the state’s disabled veterans, Ogden said. The hunters will be divided into two teams — one team will hunt in August and the other will hunt in September.
To qualify for the lottery, a Maine veteran must possess a valid Resident Disabled Veteran Hunting License issued by the Department of Inland Fishers and Wildlife. All applications will be placed in a lottery and the drawing for the permits will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at Cabela’s in Scarborough.
The Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose hunt this year will feature a Disabled Women Veterans Hunt for two disabled Maine women veterans and one out-of-state disabled woman veteran, Ogden said.
The application for the resident disabled veteran moose hunt lottery can be found on the Bureau of Veterans Services website at www.maine.gov/dvem/bvs/.
Veterans who cannot access the application online can call Maine Veterans’ Services at (207) 430-6035 to receive an application by mail.
All applications must be received by Maine Veterans’ Services no later than June 4, 2012.
