PERU — Five candidates are running for two seats on the Board of Selectmen at the June town elections.

Chairman Tim Holland is running for a second term.

“It takes one term to get to know how things run and I’m still learning, that’s why I want to run again,” he said.

Former Selectman Richard Powell served six years and said he wants to control spending and move ahead efficiently. He would also like to build up the town’s surplus account, he said.

There has to be more oversight of employees from the board, “though I have nothing against the employees,” he said.

“The board seems to have trouble making decisions,” and it’s time for a change, he said.

John Witherell is running for selectman the first time.

“I want honesty in town politics,” he said. “We need a board that works for the town. It must be open.”

Rick Vaughn is also seeking re-election. He is a town highway department employee.

If Article 26 passes, prohibiting town officials from simultaneously being town employees, he would have to resign as selectman, if elected.

Selectman Kathy Hussey would also have to resign if Article 26 passes, because she serves as secretary to the selectmen.

Laurie Ann Milligan and Ed Ferland are the other two selectmen.
