RUMFORD — Drenching rains and high water this past weekend forced postponement of the Mahoosuc Land Trust‘s work trip on
to Saturday, June 9.
Still billed as a celebration of National Trails Day, the Whitecap Work Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Work has started to rough out a trail from the summit of Whitecap to Black Mountain, Jolan Ippolito, Mahoosuc Land Trust development associate, said Monday by email.
That will be the focus of the work day, although maintenance also will be completed on existing trails, especially due to three days of hard rain.
“We have our fingers crossed,” Ippolito said. “Although many of the areas where we normally were seeing erosion were rebuilt. This will surely be the test.”
She said fields behind her house on Route 5 are just as flooded as they were during the Flood of 1987.
Trip participants are asked to meet at the Whitecap Parking Area on East Andover Road and to bring gloves, small hand tools such as clippers and loppers, lunch and water. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the work day.
For more information and directions, call the Land Trust at 824-3806 or write info@mahoosuc.org.
