MANCHESTER — Drama unfolded downtown Thursday when a Maine State Police trooper thwarted a bank robbery, spurring a vehicle chase that ended with a crash in downtown Winthrop.

Police said Trooper Dane Wing was in the area of the Savings Bank of Maine on Route 202 when he spotted a young man wearing a mask.

Dane confronted the suspect before he could enter the bank, police said. Before he could be taken into custody, the man took off in an SUV and sped toward Winthrop with Wing in pursuit.

The chase ended on Main Street — near Pete’s Roast Beef in Winthrop — a few minutes later after the SUV collided with a tow truck and a delivery van, forcing the suspect to flee on foot.

Before he got very far, the man was tackled by local residents, including a Baptist missionary who was visiting the area, and arrested by police.

The incident remained under investigation later Wednesday. The name of the suspect was not available.
