GREENE — Kristie Morin started her new business, Yummo Carts, about a month ago, without any advertising, unsure of the market.
Already she’s booked three weddings, a corporate event, a nursery school Carnival Day, a birthday party, and one mom-to-be has hired her as part of a big reveal: She’ll tell shower guests the sex of her baby based on the color of Morin’s cotton candy.
“I better bring pink and blue,” Morin said.
Wednesday she’ll be in Lewiston’s Veterans Memorial Park during the Liberty Festival.
Morin, 29, had access to food carts through contacts of her father’s, Nel Morin. She had experience, having helped her dad with his pizza and french fry trailers as a teen. And she couldn’t find anyone locally offering catered carnival food.
“Nobody does cotton candy birthday parties or anything like that, and everybody loves cotton candy — I know I do,” Morin said.
Her mother, Linda, inspired the company name. “‘Yummo,’ she used to say that when I was little (instead of yummy.) She still does.”
Morin’s different carts with gleaming silver counters and colorful signs look like they could be found at an amusement park. She offers cotton candy, churros, Italian ice, funnel cakes, popcorn, large cookies, nachos and soft pretzels.
“I’m thinking snow cones, candy apples” down the road, she said.
Cotton candy birthday parties, for she and the little pink cart, for up to 20 people, start at $75.
Morin has fit the new line of work between two other jobs, one of them a commercial cleaning business, K+L Green Clean, where she’s co-owner. She’s been pleased, and surprised, at Yummo Carts’ initial reception, particularly in the rough economy.
“I think once I started the cleaning business I knew I loved owning my own business and I wanted to own more,” she said. “I probably won’t stop with this one. I enjoy creating things and seeing them become successful.”
