WEST PARIS — This spring, South Paris author Patricia Probert Gott met with the third and fourth grades of the Agnes Gray School for a unique story hour at the West Paris Library. She read to them from her newest book in The Horse Tails series, “Horse Tails by Famous Fred.”
Famous Fred’s story captured their attention and would be of interest to horse and animal admirers of all ages. Fred “narrates” his own story, and as he is a horse he communicates with a language of many different whinnies and nickers. His voice in the book is so believable that anyone who meets him in person will be disappointed if Fred doesn’t say “hello.”
Fred tells his tale from his birth in California to his retirement at age 32 in Norway. He talks about his friends, both horses and people, and his adventures. He talks about his career as a polo pony and his rescue from that rough world. Ultimately, his intelligence and kindness and stamina suited him for trail riding, and he is grateful that he was given the chance to pursue this love. As he speaks of these things, Fred never talks down to his reader. He educates about horse breeds, horse names, the anatomy of horses, etc.
