WINTHROP — The Bailey Public Library invites people to take part in a summertime community read of “Father of the Rain,” by Lily King. The idea is for residents and neighbors to read the same book at the same time.
A Community Discussion has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 18; and the library will host King at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24.
King’s first book, “The Pleasing Hour,” published in 1999, was a New York Times Notable Book.
In 2005, her second book, “The English Teacher,” was a Chicago Tribune Best Book of the Year and a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Best Book of the Year. Her most recent book, “Father of the Rain,” tells the story of a girl struggling with her devotion to her alcoholic father as she grows to adulthood. The book was on Publishers Weekly’s and the Washington Post’s lists of best books of the year. It won the New England Book Award for fiction and was a New York Times Editors’ Choice.
Copies of King’s books will be available for sale through Apple Valley Books. The library is at 39 Bowdoin St. For more information, call 377-8673.
