“It takes a woman to do things after all,” is the sentiment of Mechanic Falls people, after seeing what Mrs. Mabel Knight has done for them, by way of having an Old Home Week worth while. The celebration will open Monday, Aug. 5, with a concert by the Dominican Band of Lewiston. The Tuesday evening program will be in the form of farces, readings, music and tableaux. On Wednesday evening, a male quartet and a large chorus will perform, followed by a dance. Thursday will be Gala Day beginning at 7:30 in the morning, when a fantastic parade will be in order. This will be led by a local band, and it is expected that strange sights will be on parade thru the streets of Mechanic Falls.

Just a few days ago, a large plot of land on the Western Avenue side of the new Edward Little High School was seeded in preparation for its use by students. Principal Arnold G. Westerberg reported today that the field will be used for all physical education activities, and also will be used as a drill field by the band, and as a practice field for all school sports. “When the turf is strong enough, we will even use it for football,“ he said. It is not expected to be ready, however, until the fall of 1963.

Following through on a legislative order, the University Board of Trustees on Monday approved money for a modest four-year bachelor’s degree program for Lewiston-Auburn. Plans will soon be underway to find a facility for its September, 1988, opening, Chancellor Robert L. Woodbury said. The L-A College will be under the direction of the USM campus, with assistance from the Augusta and Farmington campuses.
