NEWRY — Sunday River’s third annual Tough Mountain Challenge kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m.
The event — which has grown from 200 to 2,500 racers — features an uphill obstacle course and a timed run for competitors. Racers will leave in heats of 100 every 15 minutes throughout the day.
Obstacles on the course include running snowguns, barbed wire, mud pits and fire. The course also features several water obstacles and other hazards that racers will have to negotiate to finish the course.
Spectators and racers are invited to watch other competitors tackle the Tough Mountain Challenge course from two major viewing locations — the South Ridge base area and the Barker base area.
See Sunday’s Sun Journal, Maine section, for complete race coverage from Saturday or visit www.sunjournal.com for stories and videos from the race.
