WARREN — An Augusta man was wounded early Tuesday morning in a shooting that occurred during a fight at a Warren residence.

The man — whose identity has not been released by police — was shot once in the chest with a handgun, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison. He was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport but was expected to be flown by a LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the sheriff said. She said he was in stable condition.

The shooting occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at a home on the Camden Road, also known as Route 90, in Warren.

The man was staying at the residence when the fight occurred. The sheriff said officers know who fired the shot but have referred the matter to the district attorney’s office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau said he wouldn’t comment until later Tuesday.

Deputies Paul Pinkham, John Hansen, Sgt. James Moore and Detective Reginald Walker responded to the shooting. Walker is leading the investigation.
