FARMINGTON — A 23-year-old local man was rescued from the waters of the Sandy River on Tuesday evening after a friend reported him facedown in the water.
Two friends were swimming and apparently alcohol was involved, said Sgt. Michael Adcock of the Farmington Police Department.
One noticed his friend was facedown in the river and called for help but was unsure of the location. He reported they were near the train trestle close to Center Bridge, Adcock said.
Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue and NorthStar personnel, along with Adcock and other officers, searched the area and tracked the swimmers down to a sandbar close to the bridge.
The rescued man was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital but paramedics indicated he would be OK. He had passed out, Adcock said.
Adcock would not provide the man’s name.
No charges are expected, he said.
Other swimmers near the trestle said police and firefighters arrived and began asking if they had seen someone floating down the river. They then rushed toward the bridge, said one swimmer who wanted to remain anonymous. She and her friends had not seen anything.
Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue did a great job of getting down there quickly when the call came in at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Adcock said.
