JAY — Selectmen will be discussing instituting a fund balance policy at their meeting Monday.
Auditors recommend a policy be put in place that would establish guidelines on how the town’s undesignated funds could be used and how much money is good to keep in the account, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said Wednesday.
Auditors recommend that towns have three months worth of operating costs in the fund to protect the town in case of emergencies.
“There are some towns that like to borrow but we don’t like to pay interest,” she said.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Town Office.
Cushman said she also plans to ask the board about Senate redistricting.
The town can request that it be redistricted from Oxford to Franklin County after the November election.
This is the year the state looks at redistricting, she said.
The town had been in the Oxford County district for years, then moved to Franklin County and then back to Oxford County, she said.
“We really feel like we are more Franklin County than Oxford County,” Cushman said.
Jay is in southern Franklin County.
After discussing the matter with the board Monday, she plans to start writing the letter.
The board will also consider its lease with Head Start, which uses a town building.
Public Safety Director Larry White also wants to discuss work that needs to be done on a fire engine, she said.
