OTISFIELD — The Western Foothills Land Trust will hold a walking tour of newly protected lands in Otisfield from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 15.

Lee Dassler, coordinator of the Western Foothills Land Trust, said there will be a brief introduction to conservation easements and an informal tour of two areas.

The walking tour will start at The Cape housekeeping cottages to view Long Point on Thompson Lake. A total of 56 acres and 1,900 feet of shoreline were donated last year by Ethel Bean Turner of Otisfield. The protected property includes Sand Island off Otisfield Cove and part of a peninsula known as The Cape.

After that tour, the group will proceed by car to the farm of Callie and Joe Zilinsky on Stonehurst Road, where about 45 acres have been protected.

The entrances to both sites are directly off Route 121 and near one another.

The Land Trust acquired three easements in 2011, with support from the William P. Wharton Trust, that protected 150 acres in East Otisfield. The third one consists of about 49 acres of working field and forest off Bean Road from donors Elizabeth and David Watson.
