FAYETTE — No one was injured Thursday afternoon when a lightning strike started a fire at house on Young Road, fire Chief Marty Maxwell said Friday.
About 30 firefighters from six towns in Lakes Region Mutual Aid responded to the lightning strike call at about 3:08 p.m. when it was confirmed it was a structure fire, he said.
The house at 246 Young Road, off Oak Hill Road, is owned by Tim and Meredith Pepper. Meredith Pepper was home at the time with the couple’s children and called in the strike after smoke started to fill the house. They were able to get out of the building safely.
Firefighters were hindered in getting to the house due to the heavy rain that was falling during the thunderstorm, Maxwell said.
Firefighters stopped the fire in the roof of the second floor bathroom.
Most of the damage was to the roof over the bathroom and porch, he said.
There was pretty substantial smoke and water damage, Maxwell said, but it is rebuildable.
He estimated there was more than $20,000 damage.
The family has insurance on the property. They stayed with relatives Thursday night.
