In an attempt to cross over the swiftest channel in the Lewiston Falls from West Pitch to the high ledges in the middle of the falls, 12-year-old Stanley Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton G. Young of 38 Middle St., Lewiston, was swept down by the current and drowned in the waters beneath the falls, at about 10.15 Thursday forenoon. He had spanned the small chasm, which is about five feet wide near the top where he attempted to cross, with a plank. He had reached about the middle going toward the center of the falls when a rush of water came upon the plank and threw it from under him. Three other boys who witnessed the accident ran to the Auburn police station. They also went to the boy’s home and told his parents.

The Auburn City Council is scheduled to take final steps, at its Monday meeting, to change the downtown Auburn traffic pattern as soon as the control system is installed and operative. The city will be adopting the recommendations of the Edwards and Kelsey survey report, doing away with the present rotary system and restoring two-way traffic to Court Street. Much of the parking is removed from Court Street. Other changes will be made on North Main Street, Franklin and Cushing streets.

Patrick Dempsey is still the hometown boy who’s done good at the movies, but now he’s winning starring roles. “Can’t Buy Me Love,” Dempsey’s first feature film in which he plays the leading character, opens Friday at Northwood Plaza. The former Buckfield resident and one-time student at St. Dominic Regional High School, plays an unpopular teenager who decides to rent a girlfriend. He is reportedly in Virginia, where he is acting in the film “In a Shallow Grave.” After completing that film, he will travel to Europe to make a firm about the maestro Toscanini entitled “By Heart.” The film will star Elizabeth Taylor and C. Thomas Howell.
