MONMOUTH — Brian Nugent of Monmouth Academy has been awarded a $1,000 Banking on the Future Scholarship from Mechanics Savings Bank of Auburn. Nugent is the son of Diane and Edward H. Nugent.

Nugent graduated fifth in his class from Monmouth Academy and was a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, Math Team, Tech Team, Envirothon Club and Student Council. He was a member of the cross country and Nordic ski teams, as well as the track team.

From 2010-2012 Nugent received the gold and bronze medals for Academic Decathlon competitions in essay, music and economics. He was named student of the month more than once and was recognized for excellence and accomplishments in academic competitions on the Math and Academic Decathlon teams in June 2012.

Nugent was also named one of the Mountain Valley Conference Academic All Stars for cross-country, track and Nordic skiing, maintaining an average grade of 90 or better in all four years of his education at Monmouth Academy.

He is the 2012 recipient of Sons of Italy Scholarship, the Vestry Thrift Shop Scholarship, WACE Coop Scholarship and the Hank and Lavinia Brown Scholarship. Nugent received the Betty S. Davis Senior Athletic Award, Trustee’s Award and Top 10 Student Award.

In addition to volunteering at the Monmouth Vestry Thrift Shop, Nugent dedicated his time to Neighbors Helping Neighbors and participated in a number of volunteer activities through Key Club and National Honor Society.

He enjoys playing the guitar and piano and designing video games.

In the fall, he will be working toward a bachelor of science degree in game design and development at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. He will minor in computer science.
