BETHEL — Stephens High School, Rumford, Class of 1950, celebrated their 62nd class reunion and 80th birthdays at the Roosters Roadhouse on July 28. Twenty-seven members and guests attended.
Upon registration, members received T-shirts in school colors bearing their class logo, thanks to past donations of generous classmates. Hot Colors, a T-shirt company owned by the daughter of a deceased classmate, Russell Lane, made the shirts. Members also received the 2012 edition of the reunion souvenir book, which contained messages from classmates in attendance as well as those who responded but were unable to attend.
Members gathered in the restaurant’s private dining room for a social get-together where decorations in school colors along with 80th birthday decor added to the atmosphere. Prior to the luncheon, Robert Rubino offered a celebration champagne toast to class members. A large cake was decorated for dessert. Norman Robichaud introduced his new bride, Joan, and they led the singing of “Happy Birthday” to members.
Studio Six took a souvenir photo of the group on the grounds of the restaurant and copies were available for a small fee.
During the business meeting, the group observed a moment of silence for deceased classmates. Co-chair and treasurer Bernard Poirier reported that nine books had been donated to the Mountain Valley High School library in memory of classmates deceased since the last reunion. These included Walter Gallant, Viola Richard Chaisson, Henry McLeary, Norman Theriault, Ferne Melanson De George, Malcolm Jones, James Lavorgna, Joyce Gamble Blair and Robert Clifford.
Co-chair Richard Austin discussed plans for the next reunion and members agreed to hold it in 2015 to observe their 65th reunion. Reunion committee members plan to meet to critique the event and discuss initial plans for the 65th reunion.
All interested class members are invited to attend monthly luncheon meetings held on the third Monday of the month. These informal gatherings are held at various restaurants in town and notices are placed in local papers. For more information, contact Margaret Deane at 364-2098 or Frances Miller at 364-4643.
