The good news is Jose Gumbs is a member of the New Orleans Saints. The bad news is the former Hebron Academy star probably won’t get on the field this season.
Gumbs, a 2007 Hebron graduate, was placed on injured reserve by the Saints on Aug. 31. He was injured in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ final preseason game on Aug. 30. The Saints did not disclose the type of injury.
Players placed on injured reserve are not eligible to return for the rest of the season, although a new NFL rule this season allows each team to designate one player who can be reactivated after week six. The Saints had not made that designation as of Wednesday.
The Saints signed the 24-year-old safety last spring as an undrafted free agent out of Monmouth University, where he was a walk on. Prior to the draft, Gumbs had worked out for the Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.
In three years at Hebron, Gumbs earned All-New England and All-Evergreen League honors as a tailback and safety.
